Inside The Four Walls is a business podcast by Nick Morgan, focusing on the sports nutrition and wellness nutrition industry. I was fortunate enough to feature on it this week. I was given the opportunity to talk about the development of the business I lead, Science in Sport PLC. I’ve led it through its development when I led the acquisition of it from the family who founded it in their kitchen. A couple of years ago we acquired another complementary business. That doubled the size of the business. We now have 170 staff and sell our products around the world.
I’m one of those very fortunate people who get up in the morning excited about going to work. The privilege of that is not lost on me. Leaving corporate life to attempt a start-up, being tenacious until this opportunity presented itself has been a long journey. At times a challenging one, but ultimately a great learning experience. No matter what size of business you run, it will humble you at times and put you back in your place. That certainly happened to me on this journey.
Nick interviewed me well. I found myself very relaxed and ended up saying more than I would normally have done. To the point I asked him to edit some potentially sensitive subjects out of the first cut. I started hesitantly and was struggling with a cough and didn’t feel enthused. But I remember finishing the interview and feeling invigorated and more passionate about the business I lead. My reflection on that was that perhaps I need to slow down and take stock from time to time. Or talk to my mentors more, and get them to bring different perspectives to what’s happening in the environment.
